The automotive industry has been undergoing a major transformation for some years now. The need to reduce the environmental impact produced for so many decades by fossil fuels, means that the future of the automotive industry must involves electric vehicles. In 2020, more than 3 million electrified (plug-in) vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and 100% electric vehicles, were already sold.
This transformation implies not only a profound remodeling of the engines and components of the automotive industry, but also of the entire infrastructure of charging points for them, both at home and on public ways (streets, highways, shopping centers, leisure centers...)
Cybersecurity requirements for electric chargers
As usual, market trends set the tone in the field of cybersecurity. About a year ago, at jtsec, we started our first project to assess the cybersecurity of an electric vehicle charger. Being a pioneer project in the Spanish market, the cybersecurity requirements to be met were not yet defined.
After an exhaustive analysis involving the different stakeholders, a draft of requirements to be met was created for evaluation according to the LINCE methodology .
The categories of functional security requirements to be evaluated in an electric car charger are shown in the following chart::
LINCE and Common Criteria certification for electric chargers.
Both methodologies can be used to evaluate an electric charger. Although it is true that obtaining Common Criteria certification requires more time and money than LINCE certification. It should be noted that the latter is only recognized in Spain, while Common Criteria is the most recognized at the international level.
As we always recommend, the choice of one or the other certification depends on whether you intend to reach the international market (Common Criteria) or the Spanish market (LINCE).
How can jtsec help you with the certification of your electric car charger?
If you are a manufacturer of charging points, as expert assessors and consultants in both methodologies, we offer you an approach customized to your needs, maximizing both time and money invested. One of the first steps is to make a correct Security Target according to the product to be evaluated, which is the basis of a coherent and successful assessment. Thanks to our experience in this type of product, we guide you step by step to optimize your resources and smooth your certification.
